Academic Dean Job Description

Instill’s mission is to transform teaching, learning, and leadership in every classroom on the African continent. We believe that the greatest levers for change in the education system are teachers and school leaders. Having received provisional accreditation as a private higher education institution in South Africa in 2018*, we intend to launch accredited teacher certification programmes in Johannesburg in 2020. We’re looking for an Academic Dean to join our small and growing team to lead our higher education instructional programming in South Africa.

When evaluating your candidacy, we will look for the following:

Qualifications and background:

You have significant experience in one or more of the following fields: instructional leadership, learning design, leading and managing teams, building and managing external partnerships

You hold a master’s degree in education, doctorate preferred. Previous experience in education management, policy, and instructional leadership is a big plus

You are an exceptional adult facilitator, coach, and teacher of teachers with a strong knowledge of instructional best practice for adult learners

You have exceptional critical thinking and interpersonal communication skills

You have strong planning and execution skills

You have a proven aptitude to lead, inspire and persuade others

You have the ability to work effectively and intensely within an entrepreneurial environment

You have a demonstrated history of an excellent teacher and student results

You are strongly aligned with Instill’s pedagogical philosophy

You have experience in developing innovative curricula and schemes of work

You have a demonstrated passion for educational development, closing educational equity gaps, and are strongly aligned with our vision, mission, and values

What does the role entail?

You will be the primary instructional leader of our first campus responsible for creating and teaching Instill courses, leading the teaching faculty staff, and overseeing all support provided to students. Specifically, you will:

Manage and strengthen Instill’s relationships with key external partners including the Department of Higher Education, donors, and investors, as well as prospective graduate students and teaching faculty.

In partnership with Instill’s Chief Learning Officer, design a comprehensive programme of study for students in education aligned to Minimum Requirements for Teacher Education Qualifications standards from Foundation Phase through to FET Phase

Support operations team members to coordinate all logistical aspects of Instill on the new campus, including but not limited to: scheduling, acquiring and creating all necessary resources, and working with staff on recruitment, enrollment, communication, student finance, student and staff policies, technology and facilities needs
