ENVIRONMENT:

A dynamic investment management company in Cape Town seeks the expertise of a Intellectual Property Legal Associate to provide legal support to the Legal team in respect of the global intellectual property portfolio, including the search of availability, registration, maintenance and protection of trade marks.

DUTIES:

* Monitoring correspondence both internally and externally with regards to all intellectual property work.
* Engaging with external legal counsel, including drafting instructions.
* Monitor and manage external legal costs.
* Engaging with relevant parties within the business and advising regarding the status of application, registration and protection of trade marks.
* Carrying out instructions in relation to trade mark disputes/objections during the filing and registration process, as well as in the protection of trademarks, and collating information and evidence in this regard.
* Liaising with IT department regarding the protection of domain names.
* General maintenance of trade marks registered in respective countries.
* This includes maintaining (i) a filing system in respect of trade marks, per country, (ii) an evidence catalogue per country, specifying trademarks registered in each country, (iii) an invoice system, (iv) a diary system for filings of trade mark registrations/renewals.
* General administrative assistance to the Legal Team as and when required.
* Arranging multiparty meetings, managing diaries, arranging dial in details, booking meeting rooms, VC and TP facilities for conference calls and meetings.
* Arranging travel & accommodation.
* Processing basic legal documents, including reviewing and commenting on basic legal documents, including non-disclosure agreements, events agreements, addenda to existing legal agreements, etc.
* Adhering to the Code of Ethics and related policies, including personal account dealing, gifts, inside information, etc.
* Ensuring Compliance forms and declarations are completed and returned on a timely basis.
* Ensuring timely completion of Compliance training.
* Ensuring that you maintain appropriate level of training and threshold competence levels.
* Ensuring you keep up to date on procedures and best practice relevant to your job responsibilities.
* Ensuring regulatory, client and other corporate records are maintained.
* Ensuring that firm and client data and property, including IT data, are properly protected and that advised best practices are followed to maintain confidentiality and security of all data.
* Reporting any possible and actual breaches, errors, or complaints.
* Reporting any possible concerns about conduct or unfair treatment of customers to Compliance.
* Reporting any suspicion that a client, investor, or employee may be involved in money laundering, fraud or other crime.
* Being alert to possible wider Compliance and Operational Risk issues within the general business.
* Ensuring that your team procedures are kept up-to-date.
* Ensuring that all changes in business practice are taken through the appropriate business forums.
* Ensuring that regulatory, client and other corporate reporting deadlines are met.

REQUIREMENTS:

* Legal Degree Essential
* Minimum of four years relevant legal experience.
* Experience in intellectual property would be an advantage.

System Skills:

* Microsoft Office
* Cloud-based system such as Salesforce, iManage, SharePoint an advantage.
