Requirements:

Matric
Course in Workshop Management an advantage.
At least 5 years’ experience in woodworking or set manufacturing.
Previous managerial experience with regard to managing workshop employees.

Main Objectives:

Manage the manufacturing process of sets and set elements in the workshop of SDS Durban.
Manage workshop, equipment stores areas and functions (manufacture, maintenance, preparation and dispatch) including staff members working within these areas.
Co-ordinate cost-effective equipment maintenance and refurbishment for Sets, Drapes, Screens.
Ensure cost effective manufacturing of sets according to drawings, specifications and cost of sales
Install/construct and dismantle set, draping or screen elements onsite, as required.

Responsibilities:

WORKSHOP

Attend Daily Operations meetings to finalise logistics of upcoming jobs.
Attend daily production meetings to finalise workshop production and crew requirements together with General Manager.
Plan and schedule confirmed Sets Drapes Screens (SDS) jobs together with the General Manager and Project Manager.
Assign Workshop crew to jobs and keep crew schedule up to date in an accurate and correct manner.
Assign delivery, collection, and staff, ensuring smooth and timely runs and communicate transport requirements to General Manager.
Ensure that all crew have the relevant information, drawings and brief to complete the job in the workshop.
Oversee the manufacturing/construction/finishing of set, structures and staging pieces to design, safety and quality specifications.
Perform a quality control function regarding product and delivery.
Manage the general preparation manufacturing of all set elements, including shipping, loading and cleaning, ensuring timely completion.
Correctly carry out all paperwork systems to control all internal and external hire stock including gate controls and truck releases.
Ensure that basic stock levels as required are up-kept and ensure that the allocation of the jobs is correct.
Communicate work schedule to all crew as well when and where they should be.
Ensure that the workshop and SDS premises are kept in a clean, orderly and safe manner.
Ensure that all industry safety legislation which is relevant and has an impact on the company is adhered to in the workshop.
Manage store operation together with General Manager and ensure that all tool documents and registers are up to date.
Report any machine damage/ loss to General Manager.
Ensure that Workshop is left in a safe and clean order daily.

ONSITE

Conduct him/herself appropriately on-site, adhering to dress codes and safety standards.
Setup/install equipment according to drawings, plans and/or instructions.
Exercise flexibility and professionalism in all on-site dealings, particularly with regard to clients.

MAINTENANCE

Oversee the off-loading and checking of returning equipment.
Regularly assess the condition of stock equipment, checking for damage and wear.
Maintain SDS equipment at top standard and manage all maintenance, cleaning, general refurbishment and repair activities.
Forecast and allocate overtime and produce a working task list for all permanent/freelance Set Drapes Screens technicians and stagehands.
Monitor and take responsibility for all set bays including labelling and moving equipment to new areas when necessary.

CONSUMABLES

Check and report on supplies and order requirements for stock material and consumables.
Check and sign for deliveries

STOCK CONTROL

Ensure that all SDS tools/equipment are labelled correctly, and that old markings and labels are replaced when necessary.
Conduct periodic stock-takes of existing equipment and tools.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Enforce safe working practices amongst technicians and workshop staff, ensuring that Health and Safety regulations are complied with.
Make sure that the Workshop and Stores areas are kept safe, clean and presentable at all times.

PERSONNEL

Oversee and enhance the technical capabilities of workshop staff through guidance and training.
Mentor the SDS technical team by directing their work efforts and addressing internal issues as they arise.

GENERAL

Assist management with all other duties as required.
